About Us

"Our vineyard project started in 2010 while drinking an excellent Malbec in our home in Houston, Texas. As a native Argentinian, I am a red wine lover and decided to make a wine to honor Andes Mountains' magnificence and the wonders of the Argentinian land."

Our History

The Alvarez Mattiuzzi Vineyard is a Houston family-owned business. Ricardo and Gloria met in Houston in 1991, where they came to continue their careers in the medical field. A native Argentinian and passionate wine lover, Ricardo Alvarez started this family project with his wife, Gloria Mattiuzzi, in 2010 and has produced wines since 2014.

REGIS wines are made with the highest quality grapes cultivated and hand-picked in the coveted Uco Valley terroir. We prioritize excellence over volume, ensuring that each bottle of our labels embodies the essence of Argentina’s finest. This dedication to quality has earned REGIS wines numerous Gold and Silver medals at prestigious international wine competitions and has received an outstanding 91 points from the renowned James Suckling Rate Wine System.

The wines are distributed exclusively by the owners in select United States locations.

About Vineyard

The Alvarez Mattiuzzi Vineyard is in Uco Valley, at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, at a high altitude of 2,000 feet to 4,900 feet above sea level and a latitude of 33 S.

Uco Valley is home to some of the region’s most famous wineries. It is a valley formed by the frontal Andes Mountains range and the Huayquerías region. Mendoza is the largest wine-producing region in Argentina, with a desert-like landscape where vineyards are irrigated by snowmelt from the mountains.

Soils in Uco Valley are heterogeneous. Typically, soils are alluvial with a clay/rock base and a sandy, stony surface, sometimes with large boulders. Limestone’s properties allow it to retain water, creating a good place for the roots and microflora interaction and, ultimately, more concentrated wines with great minerality.

Elevation and proximity to the Andes area benefit from high daytime temperatures and cooler nights. This allows the grapes to produce balanced sugars and acidity while achieving phenolic ripeness. A dry continental climate, with less than 220 mm of rainfall, will enable wineries to control irrigation. The hot season lasts 3.8 months, from November to March, with an average daily high temperature above 82°F. The cold season lasts 3.1 months, from May to August, with an average daily high temperature below 64°F. In summary, this area is characterized by extreme weather, high variations in daily temperature, dryness, and periods of drought. These extreme weather conditions favor excellent grape production, guaranteeing superior raw materials for great wines.

The region is worldwide known for red grapes, standing out the varieties Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tempranillo, and Bonarda, among others. Among the white varietals, the most recognized are Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Semillón, Pedro Giménez, Torrontés Riojano, and Viognier.

Viticulture Practice

We adhere to evidence-based principles (EBP) in viticulture, which involves combining expert knowledge, core viticulture values, and the latest research to guide decision-making and produce exceptional wines.

We use natural fertilizers that help improve soil structure and support biodiversity, which leads to healthier vines and a thriving ecosystem.

We practice precision viticulture, employing sensors to gather detailed information about soil and climate. This technology helps us predict the best harvest times, identify optimal planting areas, and prevent diseases and pests.

Our team is responsible for highly dedicated canopy management and precision drip irrigation. The harvest is manually picked, and only selected branches are selected.

Wine Style

Our wines are barrel-aged and barrel-fermented in new and second-use French oak barrels. We use co-fermentation for our blends.

When wine is fermented in the barrel, the fresh fruit aromas take on a more dried fruit quality as the yeasts extract the toasted, vanilla-like flavors from the wood. We use extended maceration with grape seeds and skin to increase the wine’s color, flavor, and tannin structure.

Barrel aging can add length, depth, intensity, and complexity to a wine. It can also add aromatic compounds like vanilla, tea, tobacco, caramel, and tannin. Wines can become softer, taste richer, and feel more substantial after oak aging. Oak is porous, meaning it allows the amount of water and alcohol to evaporate and oxygen to access the wine.

We use co-fermentation for our blends. Unlike traditional blending, which combines finished wines, co-fermentation involves fermenting multiple grape varieties together in the same barrel. This method enhances the wine’s color, texture, aroma, and results in softer tannins

REGIS wines are characterized by deep-purple color, full-bodied, and well-balanced characteristics: generous round tannins, vibrant acidity, and persistent finish.

“We preserve a simple winemaking philosophy: wine should be based on the quality of farming, minimal intervention in the cellar, and time-honored methods of healthy fermentation and harmonious blending.”
